medical_services Suspected Decompression Sickness (DCS)

warning Immediate Actions:

  1. 1

    Stop activity, keep still

Lay the diver flat or in recovery position; avoid exertion and keep warm

  2. 2

    Call emergency services immediately

999 (UK) / 112 (EU) / 911 (US) or local number; follow their instructions

  3. 3

    Contact DAN Emergency Hotline

Use your regional number for diving-medicine guidance

  4. 4

    Administer 100% oxygen if trained

Use a demand or non-rebreather mask; monitor airway and breathing

  5. 5

    Hydration

Small sips of water if conscious and not vomiting; keep warm

  6. 6

    Prepare information

Have dive computer/logs, times, depths, surface intervals, symptoms ready for responders

block DO NOT:

  • closeFly or go to altitude
  • closeRe-descend to “treat” symptoms
  • closeDive again
  • closeGive alcohol or sedatives
  • closeGive aspirin/NSAIDs unless directed by a clinician
  • closeDelay seeking medical help

air Out of Air Emergency

Immediate Actions:

  1. 1

    Signal your buddy

Use the out-of-air signal (hand across throat)

  2. 2

    Use an alternate air source

Take your buddy’s alternate (octopus) or share from a long hose as trained

  3. 3

    Ascend together immediately

    Controlled ascent ≤ 9 m/min (30 ft/min); maintain contact and buoyancy control

  4. 4

    Safety stop only if safe

~3 min @ 5 m (15 ft) only if gas and conditions allow; otherwise surface and signal

lightbulbPrevention: Check SPG frequently, plan gas with a reserve (≥ 50 bar / 700 psi), practice air-sharing and ascent skills.

person_search Lost Diver Protocol

If you lose your buddy:

  1. 1

Stop and look around for 1 minute

    Search 360° in all directions

  2. 2

If not found, ascend slowly to surface

Ascend slowly to the surface; perform a safety stop if gas and conditions allow

  3. 3

    Signal on surface

Use whistle, SMB, or wave for attention

  4. 4

    Alert boat/shore personnel

Initiate search per operator procedures; provide last-seen time and location

warningImportant: Never dive alone. Always maintain buddy contact. Use surface marker buoys (SMB) on every dive.

favorite CPR & Rescue Breathing

If a diver is unconscious and not breathing:

On the Surface:

  1. 1

    Call for help immediately

Alert emergency services - 999 (UK)

  2. 2

Get diver out of water if possible

Or perform in-water rescue breathing if trained

  3. 3

    Check for breathing and pulse

Check responsiveness, breathing, and pulse for up to 10 seconds

  4. 4

    Start CPR if trained

If not breathing normally and you are trained: 30 compressions at 100–120/min, depth ~5–6 cm for adults, then 2 breaths; continue cycles

If not trained in rescue breaths, perform hands-only CPR (continuous compressions)

  5. 5

    Use AED if available

    Follow device instructions

schoolImportant: Take a CPR/First Aid course and keep your certification current. Practice rescue skills regularly.
